Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER) is seeking a scientific programmer to support algorithm development, data analysis/visualization and validation/verification activities related to remote sensing and prediction of atmospheric/ meteorological and Earth-surface phenomena. Position requirements are a MS or BS in meteorology/atmospheric science/geophysics and demonstrated software development skills. Alternately, candidates with a degree in computer science, electrical engineering or related field and a background in meteorology/geophysics will also be highly ranked. All candidates must demonstrate proficiency in at least one high-level programming language and exhibit a strong mathematics background (minimally through calculus). Familiarity with Unix operating systems, data visualization techniques, environmental satellite remote sensing and standard data formats (e.g., HDF, netCDF, GRIB) a plus. Preference will be given to candidates with direct experience in: IDL, Java, GIS, ESRI image processing software and object-oriented software development.

The ability to obtain a secret-level security clearance and U.S. citizenship is required

Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER) is seeking a scientist to develop, validate and integrate new/enhanced numerical techniques to forecast the occurrence and transport of dust, aerosols and other atmospheric phenomena that can interfere with electro-optical systems operating in the visible to infrared. The successful applicant will work closely with other scientists and software engineering staff within AFWA and be expected to interact at a high level with the broader science community. Specific requirements are a PhD or MS in atmospheric sciences or related discipline with an emphasis in numerical weather prediction, advanced knowledge of aerosol and dispersion modeling, and demonstrated ability for self-directed research. Familiarity with UNIX operating systems, data visualization techniques and software (e.g., MatLab, GrADS, IDL), software development experience (FORTRAN, C, Perl, and UNIX shell scripting) and a capacity to work within networked and client/server environments also required. Experience working in a massively parallel, distributed memory environment is a plus

Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER) is seeking motivated scientists and systems engineers with experience in satellite remote sensing to support development of ground processing software for a next generation satellite system, the GOES-R program. You will work as a team, interacting with system architects and software engineers to support the design, implementation, integration and test of ground processing algorithms to derive environmental products from down-linked satellite data. Activities will include requirements analysis, algorithm analysis and prototyping, algorithm test and evaluation, modeling and simulation, and documentation for all phases of design though implementation.

Candidates with a variety of experience levels are sought. Minimum requirements are a MS or BS degree in the physical sciences plus a minimum of 3 years experience in relevant fields (advanced degrees may be substituted for work experience). Relevant areas of experience include meteorological and surface remote sensing, solar X-ray and UV observations, in-situ space particle detection, lightning detection, and instrument calibration. Successful applicants will interact closely with scientists to design, develop, test and integrate software applications to produce environmental products from satellite instrument data. The position requires both new software development and ability to adapt/extend existing science codes. New development will be done in C++. Existing codes are in C/C++ and FORTRAN 90. The position will require supporting all phases of the software lifecycle including: requirements analysis, design, coding, unit test, I&T, documentation and maintenance. The position will apply AER’s software process standards including configuration control, design control, testing, and auditing.

The C/NOFS (Communication/Navigation Outage Forecasting System) Data Center, located at the Air Force's primary research facility, AFRL, performs the data collection, processing and distribution for both satellite and ground-based measurements in support of DoD's capability to forecast the impacts of ionospheric conditions on communication and GPS navigation systems. Data collected by these sensors will assist scientists in the development of the next generation physics models while providing impact products for use by various DoD organizations.
