Blackouts can cost businesses and consumers billions of dollars annually. Recent severe weather storms, such as Superstorm Sandy and tornados in Moore, Oklahoma are examples of the inconvienent and costly blackouts. AER and Hartford Steam Boiler (HSB) are creating a service that will help facilities assess and manage the risk of energy blackouts.

"The underlying technology allows us to say the chances next year of having widespread power outages are... and we can describe that for an individual facility or we can look at a grouping of facilities," said Kyle Beatty, senior vice president with AER told Boston Business Journal in the article Two New England firms team up to develop blackout forecasting tool.
