Cloud Remote Sensing Projects

CDFS II: The Cloud Depiction and Forecast System - Version II (CDFS-II) is a major program to replace and upgrade the operational global cloud analysis and forecasting capabilities of the United States Air Force. CDFS-II will continue the unbroken 30-year record of real-time global cloud analysis operations at the Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) outside Omaha, Nebraska. The program provides new science algorithms and operational infrastructure to analyze combined global-coverage data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP), the civilian Polar Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) program, and the international constellation of geostationary environmental satellites operated by the United States, Europe, and Japan. AER is the developer of the CDFS-II science algorithms and leads the Science IPT.

ARM: Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program: The Department of Energy is sponsoring an AER research effort to compare satellite retrievals of cirrus Ice Water Path (IWP) with ground-based and aircraft retrievals/observations of ice-water content and ice-water path. . Under this program three new retrieval methodologies (two ground-based, one space-based) are being developed as well. New retrieval results will be compared with existing ice cloud retrieval methods, especially for cirrus measurements collected during ARM intensive observation periods (IOPs).

NPOESS: National Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellite System. Development and evaluation of cloud and aerosol property retrieval algorithms for the next generation of U.S. environmental satellites. Currently using high-resolution infrared measurements to
characterize ice-cloud characteristics within collocated microwave footprints. Also supporting EDR algorithm specification for the Aerosol Polarimetry Sensor (APS).

MSIV: Multispectral Image Viewer: Development of an X-based display tool to provide visualization, manipulation, and quick-analysis capabilities for use in interactive interpretation of satellite imagery and visual evaluation of satellite-based EDR retrieval algorithms.

SIDAS-II: Satellite Image Display and Analysis System II: Structured software development effort to produce a second-generation interactive visual data analysis system in a extensible object-oriented architecture to support future capabilities enhancements.
