Climate change and its impacts are among the most serious problems facing all aspects of society, from health and safety, to economic development, to security. Although mitigation actions, for example, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, will help to reduce the rate of climate change, it is now clear that climate change is occuring, that significant change is inevitable, and that adaptation will be essential and on-going. Well founded strategies for both mitigation and adaptation require the most complete possible understanding of the magnitude and impact of climate change within specific timeframes and for specific geographic and economic areas of interest. Furthermore, since the particulars of climate change are still uncertain to a large degree, decision-making must be informed by the range of possible outcomes.

AER scientists have studied a number of vital issues associated with weather, oceanography, water resources and climate and have made key contributions in advancing the scientific understanding of climate processes, as well as developing clear, precise and user-targeted information and climate predictions and providing sector-specific climate services—including advice, tools and expertise—to better meet the needs and requirements of adaptation strategies and to support decision-making. Physical oceanographers working with atmospheric scientists including atmospheric chemists, tropical cyclone meteorologists and modeling experts deliver a wealth of expertise in response to the following questions:

“How will climate change impact my business, my investment portfolio, and my customer base over the next 15 - 20 years?”

“What does my company need to do to prepare itself for the expected changes over the next two decades?”

“Is my business or my customers’ businesses located in a particularly vulnerable area? What are the possible consequences over the next 10 years?”
