AER's Judah Cohen "discovered that when snow cover in Siberia is above average in October — like it was the past two Octobers — it results in colder than average and sometimes snowy winters in the Mid-Atlantic states and Southern New England," according to Boston Channel 5 meteorologist Harvey Leonard.

Mr. Leonard said "Cohen believes that the deep snow cover promotes a buildup of cold air that will eventually spread into this part of the country. The cold air forces the weather-controlling jet stream further south, allowing New England to be colder than average."
