The report “Solar Storm Risk to the North American Electric Grid,” produced by Lloyd’s in cooperation with AER, was launched yesterday at the Electric Infrastructure Security Summit.

The report analyzes the likelihood of geomagnetic disturbances from space weather and potential severity for the U.S. electric grid. Even a small solar storm would be of particular concern if it were to happen in the “densely populated US Atlantic coast. Physical and technological risk factors along the East Coast – such as magnetic latitude, distance to the coast and ground conductivity – make it a high risk for power outages, although the Midwest and the Gulf Coast states are also at risk.”
