AER Posts Results for Another Winning Winter Season

Lexington, Massachusetts June 28, 2005 — Lexington, Massachusetts, USA — For the sixth straight year, AER's seasonal forecast accurately predicted weather conditions for the nation's most critical winter heating period. Earlier this month, the Lexington-based company, known for its breakthrough science, posted amazingly accurate verification results for '"The sCast Report". The AER science behind the forecast continues to be one of fourteen outstanding research projects featured by National Science Foundation on its web site.

Published in the early fall of 2004, the December through February forecast, alerted the oil and gas traders of impending conditions that would reduce energy consumption throughout the middle part of the country while they focused on the colder than normal northeast and southern Florida regions. Verification is based on a comparison of forecasted and actual temperatures for the time period. The report focuses on five regions and fifteen major cities in the U.S. making it one of the more detailed long range forecasts available to traders today.

"Once again our forecast prevailed to the delight of our energy and financial customers. sCast continues to protect them from the volatility of energy and heating costs at a time when the world market is the most unstable", stated Maria Pirone, Vice President, Commercial Division, AER.Image - Observed Temperature Variance

sCast is based on a unique combination of initialization schemes as inputs to its climate model, including El Niño, global warming trends, snow cover in remote regions of the world, as well as the North Atlantic and Arctic Oscillation patterns. The final forecast is produced after thorough analysis by experienced professional forecasters led by Dr. Judah Cohen using techniques developed over the last decade. Published monthly, the report is available through AER.
