AER, Inc. Receives Patent for Hyperspectral Sensor Simulation Technology

Lexington, Massachusetts – The United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued US Patent Number 6,584,405 to Atmospheric and Environmental Research, Inc. (AER) of Lexington, MA for its next generation Optimal Spectral Sampling (OSS) data simulation technology. OSS efficiently and accurately computes the hyperspectral radiances measured by Earth orbiting satellites. Such data are routinely exploited to determine the properties of the earth’s atmosphere, oceans, and surface for environmental and defense applications, weather prediction, and global change studies. The OSS method is not only well suited for remote sensing applications, but also for the assimilation of satellite observations in numerical weather prediction models. Both applications require extremely fast and accurate models.

OSS was developed by Jean-Luc Moncet, Manager of AER’s Remote Sensing Programs. "We are already seeing the benefits of the OSS approach in analyzing data sets from a new generation of high spectral resolution environmental sensors. In addition to its inherent accuracy advantages, the OSS method might significantly reduce the cost of developing fast RT models for future instruments," stated Mr. Moncet. Although formulated for satellite sensor simulation the approach can be applied to any spectral domain and instrument viewing geometry, and to the general problem of flux or radiance computation in emitting and scattering atmospheres. Because OSS is a monochromatic approach, the gradient of the OSS-based radiative transfer model can be produced at low computational cost and sensor simulations in scattering situations are made possible.
